About This Quote

When does one think of God? It is when he gains something from Him, when love for Him arises! I have always been fascinated by the way Sigmund Freud has made religion into a psychological theme. He believes that religious belief is a symptom of our sexual development. To Freud, religion is a way of resolving conflicts between the male and female parts of the human psyche. This is the same idea that many people have had about what religion can do for us.

Another person who has thought about religion in this way is Mahatma Gandhi. He believed that there are two aspects of religion—one of them, called prayer or meditation, was an aspect of self-control; but the other, which he called sacrifice or service, was an aspect of self-abnegation. For Gandhi, one must purify one’s mind and emotions before trying to solve the problems of society.

Gandhi said, “I would like to see every man become a servant to all men without any distinction whatsoever.”
